You Need the Support of a Church Family
By Rick Warren
“I want us to help each other with the faith we have. Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you” (Romans 1:12 NCV).
If you’re a part of God’s family, the church, you don’t have to go through life’s ups and downs on your own.
A building is one of the most important pictures of the church in the Bible. In a building, all the connected parts hold each other together. They provide support.
You’ll have times in life when you’ll need people to hold you together. If you’re not a part of God’s family during those times, you’ll fall apart.
The Bible says of Christ, “In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit” (Ephesians 2:21-22 NIV).
Together, we form God’s temple, a building. A disconnected frame has no support and no stability. You need this stability. You weren’t meant to go through life disconnected.
I like to play Legos with my grandkids. There’s only one purpose for Legos: They’re designed to connect. If you connect Legos together, you can build all kinds of great things. But if you never connect them to each other, they’re just a pile of plastic—they’re worthless.
You are God’s Lego! You were designed for connection. You were made to be in the “building” of God where we connect to one another.
The Bible says, “I want us to help each other with the faith we have. Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you” (Romans 1:12 NCV).
Why does this matter?
Because the number one epidemic in our society today is loneliness. I talk to thousands of people. I see lots of lonely people in this world. They feel alone, and they feel disconnected.
We need the church. We need people who will love and support us no matter what we’re going through.
Talk It Over
- How have people within the church been a support to you?
- Why is it sometimes hard to depend upon the support of a church family? Have you ever been hurt by depending on the support of fellow Christians?
- How can you be a better support to other Christians this week?
